On Hits TV, there are some great discussions about where different players in this game feel the future of music is headed. Some are positive, some feel negative, some have argued different approaches to handling it, some have worried that the music industry will never recover.

What do you say? do you feel that this is the best of times? or the worse of times? Where do you think the music industry is headed?

will music be free?

will it be subscription based?

will there be copyright police added like there are internet police who catch hackers?

who is in a better position to handle all the changes we are seeing, the indie artist or the majors?

will the majors regain control of the music industry or will the indie or will the consumer?

As all ways the consumer calls the shots, most of the so called music today is not really music. We are heading back towards the days when music was music, the story tellers will be better then those of the past. Rap is about 17% less in sells the other years.

What do you say? do you feel that this is the best of times? or the worse of times? Where do you think the music industry is headed? I think the model is in the process of changing. I think we'll have to wait to see the end result to determine whether it's good or bad. I imagine it will be good for some and bad for others.

will music be free? I hope not. It costs those of us that make it. Why should it be free to those that benefit from our labor?

will it be subscription based? That's definitely a likely option.

will there be copyright police added like there are internet police who catch hackers? I hope so. Intellectual property should be protected just as any tangible property is.

who is in a better position to handle all the changes we are seeing, the indie artist or the majors? Indie artists.

will the majors regain control of the music industry or will the indie or will the consumer? C.R.E.A.M. Cash still rules everything around me. Eventually, whoever has the money will call the shots. We live in a capitalist society and most will relinquish power/control for more money.

Music is reverting back to it's roots.......There will be a flood of new and improved sounds on the radio for the new year.

People are tired of being dummied-down by what's being programmed into our heads by the radio....

Once the Auto-Tune fad wears.......the REAL Music will fade back in.......

I THINK MUSIC SHOULD BE SUBSCRIPTION BASED SO PEOPLE WHO WORK HARD ALL DAY AND NIGHT WORKING ON MUSIC CAN BENEFIT BUT PEOPLE JUST TRYING TO GET OVER ON OTHER PEOPLE USING OTHER PEOPLES ARE AND IDEAS FOR THERE SUCCESS IS TOTALLY WRONG AND THAT ASPECT NEEDS TO BE FIXED AS WELL. I MEAN HOW WOULD YOU FEEL IF SOMEONE STOLE YOUR MOVIE SCRIPT BOOK PUBLISHING DEAL MUSIC CONTRACT AND MASTERS TO ALL YOUR SONGS COPYRIGHTS AND LYRICS IT WOULD MAKE YOU SECOND GUESS THE MUSIC BUSINESS HOW SOME PEOPLE CONDUCT THE BUSINESS BY STEALING FROM OTHERS WHO HAVE NOT MADE AND THOSE WHO HAVE NOT MADE IT WORK SO HARD TO END UP HAVING THERE ARTS STOLING BUT THOSE WHO DO SO THAT ASPECT NEEDS TO BE CHANGED AS WELL SO I WOULD SAY MUSIC HAS NEVER BEEN IN GOOD TIMES EVEN WHEN THE MONEY ROLLS IN BECAUSE SOMEBODY AT THE END OF THE DAY IS ALWAYS GETTING FUCKED OVER BUT THOSE LESS TALENTED BUT HAVE THE BUSINESS SENSE TO APPLY THERE SKILLS RIGHT AND NOT PROVIDE THE SAME RESOURCES FOR THOSE WHO HAVE NOT AND THOSE HAVE NOTS ARE USUALLY INDIE ARTIST AMATUERS AND PEOPLE WHO HAVE THE TALENT BUT NOT THE MONEY OR SKILL OR REALLY KNOW HOW THE MUSIC BUSINESS WORK. I THINK THE INTERNET POLICE SHOULD COME IN AT SOME POINT TO STOP THE PIRACY RINGS AND COPY CAT RINGS YOU KNOW THE PEOPLE WHO MASS MARKET AND STEAL FROM TALENTED ARTIST WHO DONT HAVE THE SAME BUDGET AS MAJOR LABELS AND ARTIST AND I THINK THE RULE SHOULD APPLY TO MAJORS INDEPENDANTS AND TO CATCH THEIVES WHO SALE AND DOWNLOAD MUSIC ILLEGALLY FROM ARTIST WHO WORK HARD TO KEEP THE MUSIC INDSUTRY FLOWING WITH GOOD MUSIC. Do you feel that this is the best of times?

HELL no. The definition of music has changed so dramatically in recent years that it may SEEM that way. People think that as long as money is changing hands, music is prospering. But that's like saying your outfit LOOKS better because it's more expensive; you can have an expensive outfit and still be mismatched, tacky, sized-up wrongly... you get the idea. 'Music' and 'love' and 'Jesus' are three words that get tossed around with the GREATEST of disregard.

Quite possibly so. I'll tell you why: at least when the bling era and the cheapening of music began, it was new and different. As much as I can't stand P.Diddy's guts and blame him for the near-death of hip hop, the Shiny Suit Man era was BRAND NEW. Never done in that particular way or to that particular extent before. So there was a time where bling/shiny suitness/cheap beats/borrowed hits were accepted. But now... all that stuff has overstayed it's welcome. The problem is, nobody wants to SAY that, because EVERYBODY ELSE wants their shine moment. Nobody wants to go back to being the humble musician; they want the fame and fortune.

Where do you think the music industry is headed?

Musician obesity, when there will be infinite substitutes for talent such as studio magicians/programs and trainers. Executive bloat, where everybody and they momma gon own a small independent lable. Assembly line marketing, where music will continue to be sold by video, entourage, and media hype. Hell... the extinction of the line between fan and musician.

will music be free?

Music will always be free unless it is subjected to be sold. There will always be people who make music for the love of it, many of whom will never see a contract.

will it be subscription based?

Some of it probably will.

will there be copyright police added like there are internet police who catch hackers?

More than likely; if money is being lost somewhere, there will be government intervention.

who is in a better position to handle all the changes we are seeing, the indie artist or the majors?

Depends on the objective. Majors are well-suited to drawing enforcement from the government, but ill-suited to taking advantage of technology at ground level. Indies are the opposite; not very well-suited to receive government protection, but very much suited to take advantage of technological trends as they occur.

The majors will control the industry, the indies will control the "product", and the consumers will be controlled BY the industry.
