Economic rights for women

Dear Friend,

Today the House approved two bills that would help secure economic rights for women in the workplace.

These bills address issues of basic fairness for our nation’s workers. Americans should not be treated differently based on the color of their skin, faith, disability, gender or sexual orientation.
The Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act would clarify that every paycheck or other compensation resulting from an earlier discriminatory pay decision constitutes a violation of the Civil Rights Act.
The Paycheck Fairness Act would strengthen the Equal Pay Act of 1963 and close loopholes that have allowed many employers to avoid responsibility for discriminatory pay.

I'm proud that members of the House made these bills our first major legislative action of the year. It is my hope that the Senate will consider these two bills quickly and join the House in standing up for a woman’s right to equal pay and equal treatment in the workplace.

Sincerely,

Congressman George Miller
